Heat first, then compress: a cheaper path to fusion ignition, on paper
Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory researchers expanded the decades-old Lawson criterion to account for helium ash, impurities, synchrotron radiation and heat loss, and found that heating plasma before making it denser could reach ignition with far less energy, though the route has not been tested in any experiment.
